"It's terrible news for Michael Hussey. It's really disappointing for him, but at the same time I'm absolutely thrilled to be given an opportunity."
"I'll attempt to fill his shoes, they are big boots to fill, but I'll do my best to contribute what I can," he added.
Despite having played only 28 ODIs for Australia, the 26-year-old said that he was relishing the chance to take on the world's best in the Indian sub-continent.
"I'm not sure it's daunting, it's certainly a huge opportunity and an exciting one. No doubt I'll be able to learn a lot watching how the best players in the world go about it," Ferguson said.
"I've played a bit over there (in India) over the years and spent plenty of time on their wickets," he added.
